When Northwestern takes the field at Camp Randall Stadium on Saturday, Pat Fitzgerald wants his team to show its a unified group that believes in equality.

In an article written by Teddy Greenstein of the Chicago Tribune, Fitzgerald confirmed that the Wildcats would be taking the field, arms locked before their B1G opener against Wisconsin. It’s a decision made by the players, but one that the head coach strongly supports.

“I fully support our guys,” Fitzgerald told Greenstein. “Our guys are special; I think they are the leaders of tomorrow.”

According to Greenstein, Fitzgerald also spoke passionately about the impact football can make and how it can be a unifying force in the country.

“Football has every race, every religion, guys from all over the country…different shapes, different sizes, not only at this level but I watch my (sons) play and it’s the same thing. It’s a unifying force that, to me, has an opportunity to take the lead.”

Northwestern and Wisconsin will both be in the locker room during the national anthem, a standard practice at Camp Randall Stadium. But the Wildcats want to take the field with arms locked as a sign of team unity.

Saturday’s game will kickoff at 12 p.m. ET.
