Nine from B1G tabbed as semifinalists for 2017 Campbell Trophy

Nine B1G players were chosen as semifinalists for the 2017 William V. Campbell Trophy, as a list was announced on Wednesday.

The Campbell Trophy was narrowed down to 181 candidates among FBS, FCS, Division II, Division III and NAIA levels. According to the National Football Foundation’s official website, the award “recognizes an individual as the absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation.”

Here are the list of nine B1G players that were listed as semi-finalists.

  • Malik Turner, Illinois
  • Adam Greene, Maryland
  • Mike Wroblewski, Michigan
  • Brian Allen, Michigan State
  • Andrew Stellar, Minnesota
  • Chris Weber, Nebraska
  • Justin Jackson, Northwestern
  • Brandon Smith, Penn State
  • Joe Ferguson, Wisconsin

After the announcement of the 181 semifinalists, NFF Chairman Archie Manning issued the following statement.

These 181 impressive candidates truly represent the scholar-athlete ideal. It is important for us to showcase their success on the football field, in the classroom and in the community. This year’s semifinalists further illustrate the power of our great sport in developing the next generation of influential leaders.

The NFF will narrow the list down to 12-14 finalists on Nov. 1, and each will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship. The winner will be announced on Dec. 5 and will receive a $25,000 postgraduate scholarship.
