Terrence Shannon Jr. comes alive in overtime, lifts No. 17 Illinois in upset of No. 2 Texas

Terrence Shannon Jr. had a relatively quiet 2 halves in Madison Square Garden with just 2 field goals in the second half but came alive in overtime to lift No. 17 Illinois over No. 2 Texas 85-78 in the Jimmy V Classic. The Illini handed the Longhorns their first loss of the 2022-23 season.

Shannon was scoreless in the first half, which Illinois outscored Texas 37-34. The Longhorns, though, surged in the second half to take a double-digit lead.

Texas led 56-46 with 8:28 to go, but the Illini hung around. Brad Underwood’s squad kept chipping away and eventually erased the deficit in the final minute of regulation.

Jayden Epps made a 3-pointer with 33 seconds in regulation to cut it to 68-66. With 8 seconds left, Epps was fouled and sent to the line. He made both free throws to send the game to overtime with a score of 68-68 at the end of regulation. Epps finished with 11 points.

It was the Shannon show in overtime for the Illini offense. He had 12 of the Illini’s 17 points.

Matthew Mayer led Illinois scorers with 21 points, a season-high, in the game.

The Illini led for just 14:41 while trailing for 26:04. The teams were tied for 4:10.

Illinois improves to 7-2 on the season.
