The NCAA has made a rule change that will give football teams more flexibility amidst bowl-game opt outs and transfers, Cole Cubelic reported Thursday afternoon.
The move will help players whose teams need them to play in a bowl game without taking up a season of eligibility. The waiver is open for players who have played in four games and can be used for bowl games taking place after Dec. 15, 2022.
NCAA has issued a one-time blanket waiver, in FBS football, to exempt postseason participation from the limit of 4 contests a student-athlete may participate in w/o using a season of competition. The blanket waiver is applicable to FBS postseason games that occur after Dec 15, 2022.
This rule will benefit a lot of young players who have already played in some games because they now have an opportunity to play in bowl games. It will also help teams out because they can fill some spots where they are missing players who might have transferred or opted out of the bowl game, which is becoming very common in college football.
Bowl season began on Friday, so it will be interesting to see how teams use this new flexibility. This could definitely help with so many players deciding to not play in their bowl games.
