Kirk Ferentz will have one more game to worry about before closing the down on a down 2022 season. Will Iowa have 1 of its better players when it faces Kentucky?
Ferentz said that tight end Sam LaPorta is trending in the right direction to face the Wildcats in the Music City Bowl next week in Nashville. LaPorta, who suffered a leg injury in the first quarter of Week 12’s 13-10 win at Minnesota, returned to practice earlier this week.
Ferentz was feeling good about about LaPorta’s chances of playing in the game.
“I think so. He’s back on the field and seems to be doing great, so happy about that certainly,” Ferentz said.
LaPorta, a John Mackey finalist, led Iowa with 53 receptions and 601 receiving yards to go along with a touchdown.
With the departure of Kaevon Merriweather to the NFL draft, safety has become a position of need. According to Ferentz, Sebastian Castro could fill the void against the Wildcats, but much still needs to be discussed before a final verdict.
“We’ll determine that the next week and a half here, but the guys are still back there,” Ferentz said. “They’re going to be in the game, and we’re going to have a combination. A good thing that typically works as safeties, so he’ll be able to get some position flexibility there.”
Castro, who played in 11 games, recorded 28 total tackles, three pass deflections, and two forced fumbles this season.
The Hawkeyes will kick off at Nissan Stadium on Dec. 31 at noon ET on ABC.
