Ryan Walters, Purdue’s new head coach is expected to add an assistant from Illinois with coach Cory Patterson, per  Purdue beat writer Tony Dienhart. Patterson was a Fighting Illini running backs coach and was in his 5th season with the program.

Patterson was a former head coach at the high school level with Trinity Catholic in St. Louis. Due to his success he was called to move up to the collegiate level. He worked under 2 different Illinois’ head coaches and originally was a position coach with the tight ends.

Walters has hired 4 coaches prior to Patterson including offensive coordinator Graham Harrell from West Virginia and defensive coordinator Kevin Kane from Illinois. Kane was also acting as the assistant head coach and worked with the Fighting Illini outside linebackers.

Coach Walters has tried to establish his staff quickly and has filled in positions of need with some big names. Drew Brees, former star Boilermaker quarterback, will be an interim assistant coach to help the team prepare for their Citrus Bowl game against LSU.
