The San Francisco 49ers are making a change under center.

During Sunday’s game between the 49ers and Washington Redskins, head coach Kyle Shanahan pulled Brian Hoyer after completing just 4-of-11 passes, and inserted former Iowa quarterback C.J. Beathard.

Once in the lineup, Beathard completed 19-of-36 passes for 245 yards with one touchdown pass and an interception. The Niners came up short, losing 26-24, but Shanahan liked what he was from the rookie under center. After the game, Shanahan said that Beathard would be the starting quarterback moving forward.

Sunday’s game was the first time Beathard has seen any game action in the regular season.

Beathard was at Iowa from 2013-2016 and was the starting quarterback during the Hawkeyes’ B1G West division run in 2015. That year, Iowa went 12-0 in the regular season before losing to Michigan State in the B1G Championship Game and Stanford in the Rose Bowl.

Beathard completed 58 percent of his passes at Iowa and threw for 5,562 yards and 40 touchdowns.

San Francisco is 0-6 on the season.
