Joe Evans provided a jolt to Iowa’s defense and Hawkeye fans everywhere Wednesday.

A key defensive lineman during his time in Iowa City, Evans announced he would return and utilize another year of eligibility for the 2023 season. Evans has 18.5 sacks in his career.

“I have been a Hawkeye fan my entire life,” Evans wrote via his announcement. “As an Iowa kid, one of my favorite memories was being 8 years old, watching the Hawkeyes beat Michigan State in double overtime. I saw the power of 70,000 Hawkeye fans that day, and I knew right then that I wanted to be a Hawkeye. I wanted to swarm out of that tunnel wearing the black and gold, wanted to line up with a great group of teammates, wanted to win and sing the fight song, wanted to be a part of this incredible program…

“When I sat down with my family to make a decision for next year, the answer was crystal clear. I am excited to announce that I will be back next year in black and gold. I cannot pass up the chance to be a part of this team and this program again, to swarm out with my teammates and coaches in front of such great fans.”

During the 2022 season, Evans finished second on the Hawkeyes with 6.5 sacks and tied for third with 8.5 TFL. Throughout his career, Evans has compiled 21.5 TFL, 18.5 sacks and 3 forced fumbles for the Hawkeyes.
