The Heisman Trophy race could be over before the season reaches November. At least, that’s the case if you believe Kirk Herbstreit.
On Monday afternoon, a fan tweeted at Herbstreit — who covered Barkley and Penn State this weekend in Happy Valley against Michigan — asking the college football analyst if Barkley could win the Heisman with a strong outing against Ohio State this weekend.
@KirkHerbstreit does Barkley win the Heisman in October with a good performance win at Columbus?!???#heisman

Herbstreit responded with a single word answer.

While Herbstreit’s statement might sound a little premature considering there’s still a month left in the season, Barkley has been nothing short of outstanding through the first eight weeks of the season. Another strong performance against a highly-ranked opponent and the Heisman is Barkley’s to lose.
Barkley has accounted for 1,478 all-purpose yards and 13 touchdowns this season. Against Michigan, he tallied 108 rushing yards and 53 receiving yards while scoring three TDs.
Saturday’s game against Ohio State will be Barkley’s toughest test yet and a strong performance would all but solidify him as the Heisman winner.
When Herbstreit says he can lock it up this weekend, you know it’s true.
