The “Gray Ghost” uniforms will make a return to the field for Illinois this Saturday against Wisconsin.
On Tuesday, the official Twitter account of Illinois football tweeted out that the Illini would be sporting the Gray Ghost uniforms for Homecoming against the Badgers. The uniforms pay homage to Red Grange, one of the greatest football players in the program’s history.
Grange earned the nickname “Galloping Ghost” while he was a running back at Illinois from 1923-1925.

Grange was also described as a “gray ghost” in a poem that was written about his six-touchdown performance in 1923 against Michigan.

Illinois will need to channel some of Grange’s talent if it hopes to pull off an upset on Saturday.
The Illini enter the game just 2-5 and 0-4 in the B1G. Wisconsin is currently ranked No. 5 and is a perfect 7-0 on the season and 3-0 in conference play.
Saturday’s game between the Badgers and the Illini kicks off at noon ET and will air on ESPN.
