Purdue has experienced several disappointing losses over the last decade, but Saturday’s 14-12 defeat to Rutgers might’ve been near the top of the list.

The Boilermakers were double-digit favorites heading into the game and were hoping to get one win closer to bowl eligibility. But some dropped passes and ineffective offensive play really hurt their chances. While Purdue was able to muster a late scoring drive, it fell short on a two-point conversion attempt and dropped to 3-4 on the season.

On Tuesday, quarterback David Blough talked about the loss, saying the players were at fault for just “showing up” in Piscataway.

“Right now, we’re not good enough to just show up, and that’s kind of what it felt like we did,” Blough said.  “It’s not on the coaches, it’s on the players.

“We’ve got to do the little things. We’re not the most talented team in the country, we’ve got to do the little things right.”

Purdue could point to several “little things” for Saturday’s loss. The Boilers completed just 23-of-44 passes, had two turnovers and eight penalties and converted just three-of-15 third down attempts.

Blough said struggling in so many areas was a bit humbling for a team that was on the rise.

“A little humility set in for us this past week. People are having to come back down to earth from a little entitlement and get back to hard work that got us to where we are.”

Purdue will be looking to bounce back this weekend as it hosts Nebraska at Ross-Ade Stadium. Both teams enter the game 3-4 on the season.
