Michigan’s Rashan Gary on Penn State loss: Things happen for a reason

Michigan defensive end Rashan Gary isn’t responding to Saturday’s loss to Penn State the way you might believe.

While getting blown out, getting eliminated from the College Football Playoff and being ousted from the B1G East race is cause to be upset, maybe even a little angry. But Gary isn’t thinking about Saturday’s loss that way, and he’s not overly frustrated with the outcome.

At least that’s what he’s saying.

On Tuesday night, Gary spoke with Angelique Chengelis of the Detroit Free Press to talk about the 42-13 loss to Penn State, and the sophomore defensive end had some interesting statements.

“I’m happy this happened,” Gary said, according to Chengelis. “Things happen for a reason.”

“That game hurt, I’m not going to lie. But it’s one of those games that we just come back together…only make us play harder.”

It’s certainly an optimistic outlook from Gary, but maybe one that will serve Michigan better. After all, the Wolverines still have games against Wisconsin and Ohio State remaining on the schedule. Even if the maize and blue don’t win the East, a win over the Buckeyes in the season finale could turn a disappointing season into a memorable one.

This week, Michigan hosts Rutgers to try to get back on the winning path. It’ll be interesting to see how the Wolverines and Gary respond after the disappointing loss.

Saturday’s game is scheduled for noon and will air on Big Ten Network.
