Brian Ferentz received a contract amendment this past week that includes a peculiar incentive. Ferentz, the son of head coach Kirk Ferentz, is the head of a infamously rough offense, one that put up some of the lowest numbers in the Power 5 last season.

Iowa had that in mind with their amendment to Ferentz’s contract, but most Hawkeyes fans will likely find it extremely underwhelming. According to a release, Ferentz has suffered a $50,000 paycut, but will receive a 112,500 bonus if the Hawkeyes average over 25 points per game with at least a 7-5 record next season. For reference, 85 DI teams reached that PPG mark last season.

Iowa, however, averaged a disgusting 17.7 points per game in 2022. It’s also important to note that around a quarter of Iowa’s points last season were defensive touchdowns, so will this be counted towards the offense or team as a whole?

Here’s the original report.

Baby steps and all that, sure, but this seems like a slight to the turnaround Iowa truly needs on the offensive end of the ball.

Let’s see if Ferentz and the Hawkeyes can take that step.
