Seven weeks ago, Baker Mayfield and the Oklahoma Sooners marched into Columbus, posted a 31-15 win over Ohio State and planted their flag at midfield of Ohio Stadium.

But here we are, in Week 9 and both teams own a 7-1 record. One is ranked No. 3 and the other is planted at No. 8.

Ohio State is ranked higher of the two following a huge win over Penn State on Saturday, while Oklahoma is near the bottom of the top 10. That’s a situation that Mayfield, admittedly, doesn’t understand.

Mayfield met with the media on Monday and was asked about that exact situation. Here was the response from the Oklahoma quarterback.

He does bring up a valid point. Oklahoma, Ohio State and Penn State all have one loss and the Sooners own the head-to-head with the Buckeyes. By that standard, maybe they should be ranked a little higher in the polls.

That could be something the College Football Playoff committee takes into account on Tuesday night.

Oklahoma still has games against No. 11 Oklahoma State, No. 10 TCU and West Virginia, as well as a potential Big XII title game. If the Sooners win out, they’ll be just fine.

But, considering how well they have played, it’ll be hard to leapfrog the Buckeyes if they win out, too.
