Micah Shrewsberry provides cryptic response when asked about coaching Penn State next season

Micah Shrewsberry’s stock as a head coach is on the rise after leading Penn State to the NCAA Tournament. It is the program’s first trip to the tournament since 2011 under head coach Ed DeChellis.

After the Nittany Lions won 22 games this season, Shrewsberry has become linked to a number of head coaching jobs elsewhere. He was directly asked about whether or not he will be coaching at Penn State next season during Wednesday’s press conference ahead of the first round.

Shrewsberry labeled that inquiry as an “‘I don’t know’ question.”

“Are you going to be coaching Penn State next year?”

Shrewsberry: “You know what? That’s a great question.”

In a follow-up question, Shrewsberry said he’s “tunnel vision” for the moment in regard to the Nittany Lions team and his family. That does not mean things will change when the season ends, but it sounds like Shrewsberry’s total focus is on a deep run through March for the Nittany Lions.

“I am completely tunnel vision. I don’t think about anything else besides our basketball team and my family,” Shrewsberry said on a follow up to the question regarding his future.

Chances Shrewsberry leaves Penn State

While Shrewsberry is certainly building an impressive program at Penn State, it would be understandable for him to be tempted by other jobs with reports linking him to vacancies at Georgetown and Notre Dame.

Even with the solid results of this season, Penn State has made just 2 NCAA Tournament appearances since the 1996-97 season prior to going dancing this March. It would not be unheard of for a coach on the rise to become enticed by what could be perceived as a more stable job in terms of postseason play elsewhere.
