Minnesota basketball loses 2 players to NCAA transfer portal

The Minnesota roster shrank by 2 more players on Thursday, as wing Jamison Battle and point guard Ta’Lon Cooper entered NCAA transfer portal. Battle and Cooper join freshman starter Jason Henley, who announced his decision to transfer on Monday.

Despite a year when the Gophers struggled, Battle was a bright spot in the Minnesota lineup. The wing was a key player for the Gophers, and was second-highest scorer on the team this year, averaging 12.4 points per game. Last season, Battle averaged 17.5 points per game. Prior to the 2020 season, Battle played at George Washington University, where he averaged 17.3 ppg in his freshman outing.
It’s not a surprise that Ta’Lon Cooper will be transferring, but it’s still a loss for the Gophers. Cooper transferred to Minnesota from Morehead State last year. At that time, Cooper had two years of eligibility remaining, and stated that he might only use one of those two years. Along with Battle, Cooper was one of the top scorers for the team, averaging 9.8 ppg this season.
