Illinois football is losing assistant coach Sean Snyder to the Big 12. The news was made official on Friday that Snyder would be leaving the Fighting Illini football program.

Snyder’s new role will be as an assistant to the head coach on Lance Leipold’s staff at Kansas. The news of Snyder’s hiring was announced in a Kansas press release.

Snyder is the son of legendary Kansas State HC Bill Snyder. Sean has stops at USC and Kansas State.

His father coached for the Wildcats from 1989-2005. Bill then retired after the 2005 season and eventually for another coaching stint in Manhattan from 2009-2018. Bill had Kansas State’s football field named after him due to his contributions to the program.

Sean most recently was the special teams coordinator and specialists coach in Champaign. Sean actually played for his father at Kansas State as a punter from 1990-1992. After his playing days were over, Sean had various roles within the Kansas State program from 1994-2019

Snyder had a lot of success with USC’s special teams in 2020. Football Outsider ranked the Trojans’ special teams unit as No. 1 in the country for that season.

Kansas football finished the year at 6-7 under Leipold after losing to Arkansas in the Liberty Bowl 55-53 in triple overtime. With the amount of experience that Sean has, this should be a promising hire by the Jayhawks.
