On Wednesday, 56 assistant coaches were nominated for the 2017 Broyles Award. The award is given annually to the nation’s top assistant coach.

Out of those 56 assistant coaches, six of those nominees are from the B1G: Michigan defensive coordinator/linebacker coach Don Brown, Michigan State co-defensive coordinator/secondary coach Harlon Barnett, Northwestern defensive coordinator Mike Hankwitz, Ohio State assistant head coach/defensive line coach Larry Johnson, Penn State defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Brent Pry, and Wisconsin defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard.

As one can see, all of these nominees are defensive based coaches. The lowest defense out of these six is Northwestern’s at No. 54 in total defense and the highest is Michigan’s at No. 3.

An 18-member selection committee of distinguished former head coaches, along with a committee representing the Football Writers Association of America will select 15 semi-finalists and five finalists from the list of nominees and an overall winner. The winner will be announced on Tuesday, December 5th.
