Maryland announces date change for 2023 game against Virginia

Maryland and Virginia have moved up their game in September, and will now kick off on Friday at SECU Stadium.

The game, which was originally scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 16, will have its kick time and television designation announced at a later date. The contest will be Maryland’s final regular season non-conference game of the upcoming season.

Maryland has played Virginia in football 78 times, its most of any opponent in school history. The Terps are 44-32-2 all-time against the Cavaliers, including wins in their 2 most recent meetings in 2012 and 2013.

Maryland has recorded victories in 3 of its last 4 games played on Friday. The Terps defeated NC State in the 2022 Dukes’ Mayo Bowl, topped Illinois but fell to Iowa in 2021, and defeated Minnesota at home in 2020. Maryland won its lone night game in 2022, defeating SMU, 34-27.

Maryland returns a slew of talent, including Maryland career passing record holder Taulia Tagovailoa, who returns for his fourth season in College Park in 2023. The Terps also boast All-Big Ten selections in running back Roman Hemby, offensive lineman Delmar Glaze and tight end Corey Dyches, and All-Big Ten safety Beau Brade and linebacker Jaishawn Barham. Last season, the defense allowed the fewest number of points and touchdowns in a season for a Terps team since 2010.
