Ted Carter, Nebraska’s system president, gave a wide-ranging interview to the Omaha World-Herald, and made several comments about the Cornhuskers’ position in the name, image and likeness landscape.

Carter said we’re at a major intersection, and NIL is still the wild, wild west.

“There’s more conference realignment coming.” he said. “If you look at college football, there’s going to be a group of have’s and have not’s.”

However it shakes out, the Huskers are in a good position, he said.

“We are very fortunate,” he said. “We are one of the top financially secured programs in the nation. We have virtually no debt. We’re in a great place to manage NIL. Should pay for play come to us, we’ll want to make sure we’re leading. We want to be the brand that people talk about: ‘Boy, I’d sure like to know what’s going on there.’

“We have pockets of excellence that are just waiting to explode.”

Some have called for federal involvement, but Carter said he won’t look for help from Congress.

“I think if they become involved, we’ve lost,” he said. “The head of the NCAA has to help us get this answered before Congress gives us some sort of enforcement in it. I feel for those who serve at that level. They are thankless jobs. College athletics should not be part of their portfolio.”
