Jim Harbaugh has things clicking at Michigan, rolling into 2023 on the heels of back-to-back B1G titles and consecutive trips to the College Football Playoff. While a number of things go into the recent success of the Wolverines, the impact of Harbaugh’s assistant coaching staff cannot be overstated.
Speaking to the media at Wayne State Thursday, Harbaugh predicted his current coaching staff will produce a number of head coaches. He expressed “total trust” in his staff and admitted he was making a bold statement in predicting 4 of the coaches on his current staff will become head coaches at some point.
“I have total trust in the coaching staff that we have,” Harbaugh said per Anthony Broome with On3 Sports.. “I’ll make a bold statement right now, if you want a bold statement, sometimes you like bold statements. Every one of our assistant coaches will be a head coach. I’d even say four after this season. The talent, the coaching acumen and talent are really good. I won’t put any limitations on Sherrone Moore, he’s so good. He’s so good.”
Sherrone Moore’s head coaching outlook
It’s not hard to see why Harbaugh is high on Moore. After coaching tight ends for 3 seasons, Moore made the switch to lead the OL group with co-OC duties in the 2021 season.
Following Moore’s switch, the Wolverines produced back-to-back Joe Moore Awards as the top OL group in the country. Moore has another switch entering the 2023 season, assuming the role as sole OC moving forward.
At this point, it looks like only a matter of time before Moore gets a shot as a head coach. Whether or not DC Jesse Minter, special teams coordinator Jay Harbaugh or others join him remains to be seen, but Jim Harbaugh is not shy about the potential within his group of assistants.
