Matt Shaw added to his honors following a special season as Maryland’s shortstop.
Shaw was named the 2023 Brooks Wallace Award winner, the College Baseball Hall of Fame announced Tuesday, an award given to honor the nation’s most outstanding shortstop.
Shaw earlier was named the B1G Player of the Year after he hit .341 with 24 home runs, 90 hits and 69 RBIs. A first-team All-Big Ten selection in both 2022 and 2023 Shaw set the Maryland all-time home run record, and finished his career in College Park with 53 home runs passing Paul Schager (1984-87).
Shaw was in the middle of Maryland’s historic run the last 2 seasons. Before 2022, Maryland hadn’t won a conference championship in more than 50 years and played in just 3 regionals total in that span.
Shaw was named a Collegiate Baseball First Team All-American and was ranked the No. 1 shortstop in college baseball by D1Baseball during the 2023 campaign.
The award is a tribute to Brooks Wallace, the outstanding shortstop at Texas Tech from 1977-80 who passed away at age 27 after a battle with leukemia.
It’s official Matt Shaw is…𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐩 𝐈𝐧 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧🏆🐢
