Greg McElroy recently provided some insight on teams and players he is high on entering 2023. Unfortunately for Penn State, McElroy had the Nittany Lions as a team he has some question marks regarding for the season ahead.

On the latest episode of his Always College Football Podcast, the analyst and former Alabama QB dished out his “Summer Superlatives” across the sport. That included Penn State falling in the section of teams that could get off to a hot start but fade down the stretch.

McElroy did include that he does like Penn State overall but has questions regarding the depth of the Nittany Lions and Drew Allar as the starting quarterback:

“You’re gonna say I’m crazy with this but that’s okay, we can agree to disagree. Penn State is a team I have major question marks about. Not about whether or not they have talent, not about whether or not their youth from last year will continue to grow and progress, not about some of the areas, but I look at some of the pieces they lost defensively… Yes I know they have an excellent second-year LB that might be all-world, we’ll find that out. I think the running backs are excellent, but I have questions about Drew Allar.”

McElroy said he understands the expectations surrounding the former 5-star prospect, but he hasn’t seen enough to go along with Allar as a future great one:

“Everyone’s really high on him, I have question marks. I don’t know yet. I think he’s going to be good, I can’t tell you that without a shadow of a doubt, but everyone’s hyping him as if he’s the next great one for Penn State,” explained McElroy. “I’m not willing to go down that rabbit hole just yet. We’ll see. Give it a couple of weeks, we’re going to find out.”

Here’s McElroy’s latest episode with the Penn State talk beginning around the 17:30 mark:
Penn State’s 2023 schedule

As for Penn State’s schedule, the front end does shape up favorably with home games against West Virginia and Iowa while road contests include trips to Illinois and Northwestern. The area that McElroy believes will give the Nittany Lions problems is a 4-game stretch that includes at Ohio State, home vs. Indiana, at Maryland and home vs. Michigan.

We’ll see if Penn State is up to the task or if McElroy’s question marks prove to be too much.
