Pat Fitzgerald fired: Social media reacts to news out of Northwestern
By Andrew Olson
Published:
Pat Fitzgerald’s Northwestern tenure has come to an end. Over a span of 4 days, Fitzgerald’s status as the Wildcats head football coach changed from suspended for 2 weeks during the offseason to terminated from his position.
As news of Fitzgerald’s firing sent shockwaves across the college football world, reactions poured in on social media. Many college football followers are stunned by the timeline. Some media members reflected on Fitzgerald’s accomplishments, remembering when it appeared he could potentially depart for a more enticing job in the Power 5. There was, as expected, high praise for the student reporters of The Daily Northwestern who brought to light disturbing details of the alleged hazing within Fitzgerald’s program.
Here’s a small sample of the social reaction:
Will be interesting to see what Northwestern will do as far as a head coach this season. Interim coach or go out and try to hire someone longer term before the start of fall camp.

Fitzgerald out at Northwestern might end their brief flirtation with relevance.

Could've named his job years ago. To decline. To scandal. To out.
Lot easier to destroy a career than build one. https://t.co/uw9nog0qhH— Mike Morgan (@MorganOnAir) July 10, 2023
holy cow. Always thought he was one of the better coaches in the nation. What a crappy way to end it. https://t.co/HsgPFv85xr

Student newspapers remain incredibly important, and @thedailynu did a fantastic job reporting this story.
Pat Fitzgerald absolutely had to go. https://t.co/LIgi2ES3au

Just because you had a positive experience with your head coach doesn't mean he isn't sweeping the bad stuff under the rug.

I hate this. Pat Fitzgerald is a good human who cared about his players deeply. He ran his program the right way and has a stellar reputation. I have never heard anyone have a bad thing to say about him. This feels wrong.

I’d still love to know what they knew when the initial suspension was announced vs. what they first learned about when the student newspaper did its thing. https://t.co/mZg8f5WCeC

Wow. This was absolutely unthinkable a few days ago. https://t.co/wZHkov1rcz

Northwestern fell on harder times recently but its hard to overstate the job Pat Fitzgerald did there in terms of on field results. He really was the perfect coach in many ways for one of the hardest-to-win-at places in CFB.
Even recently, four top-25 finishes in the last seven… https://t.co/p6HxZBp3wU

What a fall from grace for Pat Fitzgerald

Looking back at last season, one can argue that Northwestern would have performed better than its abysmal 1-11 record, if it had the right locker room culture.
If Fitzgerald’s successor can turnaround the locker room culture, NU will significantly improve on the field too.

Congrats to the @thedailynu! The student led newspaper blew this story up over the weekend, out scooping professional reporters with decades experience. This story brought to life ridiculous behavior which will lead to change, & likely cost a lot of coaches & admins their jobs. pic.twitter.com/o2nMjzDWIE

A Northwestern football player from 1993-to-1996, Fitzgerald got into coaching in 1998. He returned to his alma mater in 2001 as defensive backs coach. He became the Wildcats’ head coach in 2006.
In his Northwestern tenure, Fitzgerald posted a 110-101 record including a 5-5 mark in 10 bowl games. The Wildcats won the B1G West in 2018 and 2020.
