Greg Schiano has named a starting quarterback for Week 1 of the 2023 season.
Gavin Wimsatt will start under center, Schiano announced Wednesday morning in Indianapolis. Wimsatt beat out Evan Simon and Ajani Sheppard for the starting job.
“I just saw him getting better and better,” Schiano told local reporters ahead of his appearance at Big Ten Media Days on Wednesday, via NJ.com.
Wimsatt is entering his redshirt sophomore season with the Scarlet Knights. He played limited snaps last year and produced mixed results. He completed 65-of-145 passes (44.8%) for 757 yards, 5 touchdowns and 7 interceptions.
Wimsatt is a former 4-star prospect. He was the No. 23 quarterback in the country for the class of 2021, per 247Sports Composite rankings.
Simon will serve as the backup in his 4th season at the program. Last season, he made 2 starts and threw for 777 yards, 4 touchdowns and 6 interceptions.
Sheppard is slated to be Rutgers’ 3rd string quarterback. He’s entering his true freshman season and was a 3-star prospect in the class of 2023.
Rutgers will open the season against Northwestern on Sept. 3.
