Ryan Walters made his first appearance as Purdue’s head coach at Big Ten Media Days on Thursday.

Walters was asked several questions about his first offseason in charge, including one about how he plans to approach in-state recruiting.

Walters said recruiting the state of Indiana will be “priority number one” during his time with the Boilermakers.

In-state, the blueprint for success in any program, you’ve got to take care of your home state,” Walters said. “That is the makeup, the general core of the locker room that those guys will take pride in, in being from their home state and playing in front of their home crowd. That’s definitely priority number one.

“So that was our main operative when we hit the recruiting trail, is to take care of home state first and then venture out to our footprint where we have connection to fill our roster that way as well.”

Walters and his staff have backed up those comments with their work in the class of 2024. Purdue already has 4 in-state commits in this cycle, which is tied for the most of any state. Purdue could end up adding to their list of in-state commits before the end of this cycle as well.

Walters will make his head coaching debut against Fresno State on Sept. 2.
