Northwestern officially announced the hiring of Skip Holtz on Thursday morning.

Holtz will serve as “special assistant” to interim head coach David Braun. The Wildcats also shared Holtz’s responsibilities in this role.

According to a press release, Holtz will assist in game preparation, day-to-day operations of the program and will advise Braun in his new role.

“I love coaching football and am passionate about leading young men to achieve their very best,” Holtz said in a press release. “This is a unique opportunity to help these outstanding student-athletes and partner with Coach Braun to do anything I can to help Northwestern football in 2023.”

Braun took over as interim head coach last month after the program parted ways with Pat Fitzgerald. Braun, who is entering his 1st season with Northwestern, does not have any prior head coaching experience.

Holtz, on the other hand, has more than 2 decades worth of head coaching experience at programs like Louisiana Tech, South Florida, East Carolina and UConn.

“With his many years of head coaching experience and tremendous knowledge of the game, Coach Holtz will be an invaluable resource for myself, our coaching staff and student-athletes during the upcoming season,” Braun said in a release. “I’m thrilled to welcome Coach Holtz to Evanston and can’t wait to begin working with him.”

Holtz’s role is not expected to interfere with his current job as the head coach of the Birmingham Stallions in the USFL.

Northwestern will face Rutgers on Sept. 3 to begin the 2023 season.
