One Mississippi newspaper editor deserves a raise.

The Clarion Ledger, a Mississippi newspaper based in Jackson, had a clever headline to announce that Penn State offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead had been name the next head coach at Mississippi State. The headline read “MOORECOWBELL,” a clever pitch referencing Moorhead’s last name, the Bulldogs’ cowbell tradition, and a popular Saturday Night Live skit.

That’s really good. And yes, whoever came up with it deserves a raise. Or at least a gift card to a local restaurant.

The phrase “More cowbell,” comes from the Saturday Night Live skit that includes Will Ferrell and Christopher Walken imitating the Band Blue Oyster Cult recording “(Don’t Fear) the Reaper.” Throughout the skit, Walken repeatedly tells Farrell he “wants more cowbell.”

It’s become one of the most popular scenes SNL has ever recorded.

On Tuesday night, Brett McMurphy reported that Mississippi State and Moorhead had reached a deal to make the PSU offensive coordinator the next head coach. No contract had been finalized, but that is expected to be coming soon.

Moorhead appears to be a really good hire for the Bulldogs. In two seasons in Happy Valley, he’s revolutionized the way Penn State’s offense approaches the game and has been the mastermind behind one of the most potent units in college football.

Because of the Nittany Lions success the past two season, Moorhead has often been referred to as “Joe Moorpoints.”

If Wednesday morning is any indication, newspaper writers are going to have a lot Moorfun coming up with headlines over the next few years.
