C.J. Beathard’s brief rein as starting quarterback in San Francisco is coming to an abrupt end.

On Tuesday, the 49ers announced that head coach Kyle Shanahan made the decision to start Jimmy Garoppolo in Week 13 against the Chicago Bears. That ends Beathard’s run as the starter after just five weeks.

Beathard has played in seven games for the 49ers this season, which includes five starts. He’s completed 54.9 percent of his passes, racking up 1,430 yards and four touchdowns. He’s also tossed six interceptions.

The former Hawkeye is in his rookie season in San Francisco.

The benching hardly means that Beathard’s NFL career is over, but it likely means he won’t see the field again this season. This is Garoppolo’s fourth season in the NFL, serving as Tom Brady’s backup with the New England Patriots before being traded to San Francisco.

San Francisco is 1-10.
