Former Ohio State linebacker and national champion (2014) Joshua Perry sat down with ESPN’s Greg McElroy to discuss the outlook for a highly-anticipated season at Penn State.

The NBC analyst would define success for the Nittany Lions with answers to a couple of questions.

“Did your quarterback play well and did you protect him? Did you play to your strengths? Did you see development out of the wide receivers throughout the year?” Perry said.

He went on to say that Penn State should field a top 3 defense in the conference, and if that is not the case, then the unit fell short of the standard.

“I think if they do most of those things, then they have a shot to beat one of Ohio State or Michigan,” Perry said. “I don’t think you have to beat both of them to have a successful year. Folks will act like 2022 was an awful year just because they lost to Ohio State and Michigan.”

Penn State will open the 2023 season with a home date against rival West Virginia on Sept. 2. The Nittany Lions will take on Ohio State (road) on Oct. 21 and Michigan (home) on Nov. 11.
