Matt Rhule spoke about how the RB competition going on in Lincoln on Saturday with the media. He named the starting running back with Week 1’s matchup around the corner.
Last year the backfield was led by Anthony Grant. It looks like that won’t be the case for now. Grant finished 2022 with 915 yards rushing and 6 touchdowns.
Rhule stated that Gabe Ervin is the clear No. 1 tailback as it stands. Rhule also said that Rahmir Johnson is a third-down back with NFL potential. The Nebraska HC called Grant more of a complete back, but the Huskers RB has been fumbling the ball too much recently.
RB Gabe Ervin is the clear No. 1. Rahmir Johnson is a third-down back with NFL potential, Rhule said, though he’s been dealing with a hamstring injury and missed the scrimmage today.
Anthony Grant is a complete back, according to Rhule, but he’s fumbled too much of late.

There’s no doubt that Ervin has plenty of talent. However, injuries have caused him to miss time in the last couple of seasons. Ervin has played in 12 total games from 2021-2022.
