Ted Carter has served as the president of the University of Nebraska System since January 2020. On Tuesday, it was announced he is leaving the Huskers and has been appointed as the new president at Ohio State University.
Born Walter Carter Jr., Ted served in the United States Navy before beginning his administrative career. He assumed his post at Nebraska on Jan. 1, 2020, and Carter will assume his post at Ohio State on Jan. 1, 2024.
“President Carter brings an unparalleled combination of strategic leadership and true service, and we could not be more thrilled to welcome him and his family to Ohio State,” said board chair Hiroyuki Fujita, PhD, who also served as chair of the Presidential Selection Subcommittee.
“We were absolutely determined to find the next great leader for Ohio State in today’s highly complex and competitive higher-education environment. With input from our university community and the highest recommendations from those who have worked with President Carter during his extraordinary career, I believe we have done just that.”
Carter released a statement on the move, calling it a “bittersweet decision” for himself and his wife Lynda. He said the two “have come to treasure Nebraska as our own home state” and called it a special place with special people.
“Ultimately, Ohio State offers the opportunity to continue to advance the work and mission of public higher education at another leading Big Ten university,” Carter claimed. “Just as Lynda and I saw the University of Nebraska four years ago as the next calling in our lives of service, we now see Ohio State as a calling that we will do our best to answer.
“We make this decision knowing the University of Nebraska is in excellent hands. From our chancellors, to our vice presidents, to world-class faculty and dedicated staff, our university system and campuses are led by a truly outstanding team.”
Impact on athletics
While the president oversees much more than athletics, there’s no denying the impact he can have on a program’s athletic department. As for Nebraska, the department is left with Trev Alberts at AD and a new head football coach in Matt Rhule.
The situation at Ohio State will be an interesting one to watch over the next few years. While Carter will be assuming his presidency post, AD Gene Smith announced earlier this month that he is retiring from Ohio State next summer. Finding a new AD will be a major piece of Carter’s early work in Columbus.
