Kirk Herbstreit narrowed his “Ultimate Herbie Award” nominees to Ohio State WR Marvin Harrison Jr., Michigan RB Blake Corum and LSU DL Mekhi Wingo.

On Thursday night, the ESPN analyst chose Harrison in part because he’s still proving himself. Host Rece Davis said Harrison not only puts up numbers, but does it in style and delivers in clutch moments.

“Because of the way his parents raised him, despite all the accolades, it’s amazing to me that he wants more, he wants to be coached hard by Brian Hartline, one of the top receiver coaches in the country,” Herbstreit said. “He expects more of himself this year than any year of his entire life.”

Sometimes players fall victim to early success, Herbstreit said, and they tend to lose their drive, but that’s not the case with Harrison.

“You almost think that he hasn’t done anything when you look at the way he practices, look how humble he is, look what his approach is, it’s almost like he’s still trying to prove himself,” Herbstreit said. “Really impressed with him as a player, as an individual, and to his overall approach to life and football.”
