Desmond Howard is aware that ESPN’s Peter Burns believes Jim Harbaugh will bolt out of Michigan after this season because of a variety of factors, including his early-season suspension and frustration with the future of the NCAA.

If that ends up being the case, Howard believes the Wolverines’ head coach could exit with a national title.

Howard made the case for his alma mater during a recent appearance on Get Up. Howard is a major advocate of quarterback J.J. McCarthy.

“When you look at college football teams, especially the ones that win national titles, it all starts with an exceptional quarterback. I think Michigan has one in JJ McCarthy,” Howard said. “He can make all the throws. He’s a very selfless player…But when they needed him to throw the ball down the field and make some plays vertical, he was able to deliver.”

Across the board, Howard sees the kind of elite talent that can help No. 2 Michigan capture the program’s first national title since 1997.

Howard is steadfast that this is the strongest squad since Harbaugh arrived in Ann Arbor in 2015.

“He has a very talented running back room. The best running back room in college football. They bring back a very strong defense. They have some talented tight ends,” Howard said. “This is probably, just looking at the quarterback position and then going down, I would think that you would say this is Michigan’s best team under Jim Harbaugh.”

Michigan begins the regular season with a home matchup vs. Eastern Carolina on Sept. 2 (12 p.m. EST/Peacock).
