Several Oklahoma fans want one of Baker Mayfield’s most controversial moments to be immortalized on campus.

A petition has been circulating recently calling for the University of Oklahoma to create a statue of Mayfield planting the Sooners flag at midfield of Ohio Stadium after a 31-16 win over the Buckeyes in September. This all sparked because Mayfield will receive a statue on campus if he wins the Heisman Trophy.

While planting the flag was one of the top moments of the college football season, many consider it to also be one of the most controversial. Days after the incident, Mayfield apologized for disrespecting Ohio State in that fashion after the victory.

Fans of Oklahoma explained their reasons behind wanting Mayfield’s statue to be of him planting the flag in the petition. Many believe the statue would show off Mayfield’s personality and competitiveness as a football player. Several supporters said that it would be “disappointing” if the statue was of anything other than that moment.

Mayfield is considered to be the favorite to win the Heisman Trophy. He is one of three finalists, along with Stanford running back Bryce Love and Louisville quarterback and former winner Lamar Jackson.

The winner will be announced Saturday night on ESPN.

The petition already has over 6,000 signatures.
