Michigan State Board of Trustees releases statement on Mel Tucker suspension

The Michigan State University Board of Trustees on Sunday released a statement after the suspension of Mel Tucker, amid a Title IX investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct by the Spartans head football coach.
“The MSU Board of Trustees has been briefed by the administration on the suspension of Mel Tucker and supports this action,” Board of Trustees chair Rema Vassar said. “We remain committed to a thorough investigation of this matter and to the continued progress needed at MSU for a safer and more supportive university.”
The university suspended Tucker without pay on Sunday, with his future in East Lansing to be decided at the conclusion of the investigation.
Longtime Spartans assistant coach Harlon Barnett will serve as interim head coach in Tucker’s absence. Mark Dantonio, head coach of the Spartans from 2007 until his retirement in 2019 and the winningest coach in program history, will return as an associate head coach, with details about his specific role to be determined per athletic director Alan Haller.
