Grant Wells is “questionable” to play against Rutgers in Week 3 with an ankle injury.

Coach Brent Pry shared that news on Tuesday while meeting with reporters in Blacksburg. Pry also said that receiver Ali Jennings is out this week and receiver Jaylin Lane is questionable with a hamstring injury.

If Wells isn’t able to play vs. Rutgers, Virginia Tech would likely to turn to Kyron Drones to start in Week 3. Drones transferred in from Baylor this offseason, but Wells beat him out in fall camp for the starting job.

So far this season, Wells has completed 53.2% of his passes for 494 yards, 5 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. He’s also averaging 8 yards per attempt so far in 2023.

Drones hasn’t been nearly as efficient, albeit in very limited opportunities. He is 3-for-8 for 40 yards so far this season.

Jennings and Lane are Virginia Tech’s top receivers. Jennings has 5 catches for 72 yards and 2 touchdowns so far this season. Lane leads the team with 9 receptions for 123 yards and 2 scores.

Kickoff vs. Rutgers is at 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday.
