Greg McElroy is concerned about how Notre Dame’s defense will match up with Ohio State’s offense in a couple of weeks.

McElroy is on the record as being a big believer in the Fighting Irish secondary. However, he said on Always College Football on Wednesday that he is concerned about Notre Dame’s ability to generate a pass rush vs. the Buckeyes.

McElroy believes having an elite pass rush will be what it takes to disrupt Ohio State’s passing attack.

“The best way to neutralize Ohio State’s passing attack is by creating a pass rush,” McElroy said. “And at this point, I have my question marks as to whether or not a pass rush can be legitimately created from Notre Dame.”

McElroy specifically questioned whether or not players like Javontae Jean-Baptiste and Jordan Botelho will be effective enough to give Ohio State’s offensive line troubles.

“I don’t know if they have that war daddy off the edge like an Isaiah Foskey or a Chase Young, using an Ohio State player as an example,” he said. “I don’t know if they have that guy.”

McElroy also explained why he doesn’t believe Notre Dame’s secondary will be able to have as much of an impact in this matchup.

“I feel great about their corners Benjamin Morrison is an All-American candidate. But guess what? Nobody is stopping Marvin Harrison. Nobody. That guy is going to get his,” McElroy said. “When you look at some of the other guys who will be in the rotation, Cam Hart and others, they’re pretty good. But nobody can cover Emeka Egbuka 1-on-1. Julian Fleming 1-on-1.”

McElroy also said he expects Ohio State’s offense to play better now that Kyle McCord has officially been named the starting quarterback.

Before Notre Dame gets its chance at Ohio State, it will face Central Michigan at home in Week 3. Ohio State hosts Western Kentucky this week.
