Walt Bell fired by Indiana after dreadful start to 2023 season for Hoosiers OC

Indiana football fired Walt Bell Sunday morning following Indiana’s 44-17 loss to Maryland Saturday afternoon.
Bell has been at Indiana since 2022 after coming over from UMass after a stint as the Minutemen’s head coach. Funnily enough, Bell was Maryland’s OC/QBs coach from 2016-2017.
Quality control coach Rod Carey will serve as Indiana’s interim offensive coordinator for the remainder of the season.

Here’s what HC Tom Allen had to say about Bell’s firing Sunday:
“I felt we need a new direction on the offensive side of the ball,” Allen said, per Indiana’s release. “Rod brings a wealth of experience and success along with a familiarity with our personnel. I wish Walt and his family the best moving forward and thank him for his contributions to our program.”
The Hoosiers have put up truly dreadful numbers on offense this season. Indiana is 2nd to last in the conference to only Iowa and Northwestern in total yards per game. Only Nebraska has fewer points per game than Indiana this season, too.
Indiana is back in action after the bye week against Michigan on October 14.
