J.C. Jackson is returning to his first NFL franchise. The former standout Maryland defensive back is being traded from the Los Angeles Chargers to the New England Patriots, according to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
This comes in the wake of Patriots rookie cornerback Christian Gonzalez likely to miss the remainder of the season with a torn labrum, according to Rapoport.

In order to smoothen out the trade, the Patriots and Chargers are reworking the remainder of Jackson’s $9.33 million salary for the remainder of the season. The Patriots are absorbing close to $1.5 million, while the Chargers will handle the balance with a signing bonus.
The 27-year-old Jackson inked a 5-year, $82.5 million deal with the Chargers last offseason.
However, he didn’t play any snaps in the last 2 games for the Chargers. During his time with the Chargers, which began in 2022, Jackson recorded 1 interception. Jackson suffered a season-ending rupture to his patella tendon in his right knee last season in Week 7.
The Patriots signed Jackson as an undrafted free agent in 2018. Jackson was a member of the Patriots squad that won Super Bowl LIII. Jackson capped off his time in New England with a Pro Bowl nod and Second-team All-Pro selection in 2021.
