Fran McCaffery met with reporters for B1G Media Days Tuesday and seems very optimistic about the 2023-24 Hawkeyes.
It’s no secret that Iowa lost a lot from last season. Filip Rebraca and Kris Murray are now out of the program, leaving Patrick McCaffery, Tony Perkins and Peyton Sandfort “in charge” of the leadership roles left in their wake.
And McCaffery is confident in their abilities to step up. Here’s what he had to say about the leadership of the 2023-24 Hawkeyes:
“I think the three guys that are here are the ones we’re looking at in particular: Tony Perkins, Payton Sandfort, and Patrick McCaffery. Patrick, of course, has been here the longest. But those guys are veteran guys. They’ve produced well at this level. They’re great people, and they do have the respect of the other guys in the locker room. So it will be interesting to watch and see how they perform in that capacity, but I’m very confident that they’ll succeed.”
While at the podium, McCaffery also noted that this season may present the most depth Iowa has seen in “quite some time.” He mentioned the 4 incoming freshman alongside transfers Ben Krikke and Even Brauns who should provide some solid minutes moving forward.
The Hawkeyes tip off the 2023 season on November 7 against North Dakota.
