J.J. McCarthy has replaced Michael Penix as the betting favorite to win the Heisman trophy through Week 8. His current odds to win the most prestigious award in college football are listed at +217.

McCarthy displaced Penix after an incredible performance against Michigan State paired with a weak performance from Penix against Arizona State. The Huskies downed the Sun Devils 15-7 despite Penix’s 275 yards and 2 interceptions.

McCarthy, however, was amazing. The standout Michigan QB connected on 21 of his 27 passing attempts for 287 yards and 4 touchdowns with no interceptions.

Here’s a look at McCarthy’s highlight tape for Week 8:

McCarthy has a real chance to become Michigan’s first Heisman trophy winner since Charles Woodson won the award in 1997. The last B1G player to win the honor was Troy Smith in 2006.

But there’s a long path ahead of McCarthy. No Michigan fan wants to hear it, but the Wolverines haven’t exactly played world-beaters all season. however, there’s something to be said for the sheer dominance in which Michigan has dispatched opponents this year, too.

Michigan is on bye in Week 9 and will face off against Purdue in Week 10.
