Jonathan Smith is reportedly bringing a key piece of his Oregon State staff with him to Michigan State. It’s particularly notable as an assistant coach in an area the Spartans have struggled in recent history.

According to Justin Thind with 247 Sports, Smith is bringing offensive line coach Jim Michalczik with him to Michigan State. Michalczik is a Broyles Award nominee this season as one of the top assistant coaches in the country and also held the titles of run game coordinator and associate head coach while with the Beavers.

Thind cited Michalczik’s exact title as “unclear” beyond serving as the MSU offensive line coach, but it would appear likely he is in line to retain both the run game coordinator and AHC titles.

Michalczik was previously reported to be one of three Oregon State assistants Smith is prioritizing for his move to Michigan State, and the Spartans are also expected to increase the salary pool for assistant coaches under Smith. Landing Michalczik — widely regarded as one of the top offensive line coaches on the West Coast — would be a major move to start Smith’s tenure.

Oregon State’s offensive line was a semifinalist for the Joe Moore Award this season under Michalczik. He spent time at Miami from 1990-91 and Montana State in 1992-98 before making the move to Pac-12 country.
