Purdue disputes validity of all-time B1G record awarded to Taulia Tagovailoa

Taulia Tagovailoa etched his name into the Big Ten record books this weekend, climbing past Curtis Painter for the No. 1 spot in the B1G’s all-time passing yards ledger. There’s just one problem: Painter did not hold the record.

That’s at least what Purdue believes. While Painter had a dazzling career with the Boilermakers, he is not the player listed in the record books as the league’s No. 1 passer.

That distinction actually belongs to Drew Brees with that official tally listed at 11,792 yards during a career with the Boilermakers that stretched from 1997-2000. Those numbers trump Painter who had 11,163 yards, and Brees’ number still outpaces what Tagovailao reached on Saturday.

So, who actually holds the record for most passing yards in a Big Ten career? Tagovailoa was credited with the number on Saturday, and he even received a congratulatory video from his family as a result of the accomplishment.

We’ll see if the B1G has a special correction down the road.
