The Big Ten awards season is upon us heading into conference championship weekend.
The individual awards recipients on the defensive side of the ball were announced on social media Tuesday. Tommy Eichenberg, Jer’Zhan Newton, and Cooper DeJean all received honors.
B1G Linebacker of the Year — Tommy Eichenberg, Ohio State
Eichenberg became the first Ohio State player to win the B1G Linebacker of the Year award. Eichenberg led the Buckeyes with 80 total tackles this season. He also accounted for 2.5 tackles for loss, 1 sack, and 1 forced fumble.

B1G Defensive Player/DL of the Year — Johnny Newton, Illinois
Newton took home the B1G Defensive Lineman of the Year and B1G Defensive Player of the Year awards. Newton was a force on the defensive line this year with 52 total tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, and 7.5 sacks. He also delivered some game-changing plays on special teams by blocking a handful of kicks and was a mainstay for the Illini defense.

B1G Defensive Back of the Year — Cooper DeJean, Iowa
It’s no shocker that an Iowa player won a defensive award. DeJean was voted as the B1G Defensive Back of the Year and B1G Return Specialist of the Year. DeJean had 41 total tackles, 2 interceptions, and 2 tackles for loss. DeJean also scored on a punt return this year.
