Smith made the move from his alma mater Oregon State to come to Michigan State, and the Spartans gave the head coach a nice raise to do so. He was coming off his first season with the Beavers since signing a new deal after the 2022 season.
That most recent deal at Oregon State was for $30.6 million over 6 years and paid Smith $4.85 million for the 2023 season. However, the money for Smith is just one part of the deal.
According to previous reports, Smith will receive a larger salary pool to sign assistant coaches at Michigan State than Mel Tucker had with the Spartans. That should allow Smith to sign a competitive group of assistant coaches as he works to rebuild the Michigan State program.
It has been a rocky and tumultuous time for the program, but the Spartans are showing their commitment to getting a quality football program on the field in East Lansing.
