Juwan Howard, alleged altercation with UM assistant reportedly being reviewed

Juwan Howard and an alleged altercation with a Michigan assistant is reportedly being reviewed by the university.

Sunday evening, Brendan Quinn with The Athletic shared an update on Howard’s situation in Ann Arbor. Various reports Sunday indicated Howard was potentially out as the head coach of the Wolverines, but a university official stated Howard’s status is “unchanged.”

However, allegations of a confrontation between Howard and UM strength and conditioning coach Jon Sanderson from a practice last week is going through a university review process. That reviw will be conducted outside of the athletic department.

According to Quinn, multiple sources have indicated claims of punches being thrown in the altercation are inaccurate:

“A confrontation between Howard and longtime U-M strength and conditioning coach Jon Sanderson in a team practice late last week is being explored and going through a university review process. It is university proecudre for such a review to be conducted outside of the athletic department.

“Multiple sources say claims of punches being thrown in the aformentioned altercation are inaccurate.”

Jalen Rose also came to the defense of Howard late Sunday night. He said Howard is still “enthusiastically hoping” to return to his role as head coach on Dec. 16. Howard has been on the bench since the loss to Oregon but as an assistant coach with Phil Martelli continuing to serve as the interim head coach.
