Terrence Shannon Jr., Illinois hoops star, suspended following charges of rape, per release

Terrence Shannon Jr., perhaps Illinois basketball’s top player, was suspended on Thursday for charges of rape.

The charge stems from an incident in Lawrence, Kansas during while Shannon was in town for a football game between the Fighting Illini and Kansas Jayhawks. A warrant for Shannon’s arrest was put out on Wednesday and Shannon has since turned himself in to authorities.

Illinois has been aware of a police investigation into Shannon since the incident took place. Here’s a release from Illinois concerning Shannon’s suspension.

Shannon is an All-American guard for the Illini and has been in Champaign since 2022 when he transferred from Texas Tech. He’s currently in the midst of his 5th season playing college basketball.

And it’s not an exaggeration to call Shannon one of the top players in America right now. The Illini guard is averaging 21.7 points per game (8th in the country), 4.5 rebounds per game and 2.5 assists per game. He dropped a season-high 30 points with 11 rebounds and 4 assists in the Illini’s recent win over Mizzou.
