Fans, media shred unsportsmanlike conduct penalty called on Michigan offense

Michigan had one drive in the Rose Bowl stifled by a costly penalty. That penalty should have never been called, according to many fans and media watching the game against Alabama.

The penalty was called on Michigan’s Max Bredeson for unsportsmanlike conduct. On the play involved, Bredeson blocked one Alabama defender to the turf and then finished off the block on top of the player by driving him into the turf.

While the finishing block did come close to helmet-to-helmet contact, many felt the play was simply Bredeson finishing off his block. Either way, what went as a first-down pickup pushed Michigan behind the stick to 2nd-and-11. The Wolverines did not get a first down and were forced to punt.
