Michigan State and Notre Dame are bringing back the Megaphone Trophy rivalry.

The programs announced that they will renew their rivalry with a home-and-home series in 2026 and 2027. The first game will take place on Sept. 19, 2026 in South Bend. The Fighting Irish will make the return trip to East Lansing on Sept. 18, 2027.

Michigan State and Notre Dame have not met since the 2017 season. In that game, the Fighting Irish won 38-18 in East Lansing. Michigan State won the year before on the road in South Bend.

Notre Dame leads the all-time series advantage 47-29-1. The last 64 meetings in this series have featured at least one team who was ranked in the AP Top 25 poll.

Michigan State does not have many high-profile nonconference opponents scheduled in future years. The Spartans will face Boston College in 2025 and BYU in 2032. Besides those 2 games and this series against Notre Dame, they don’t have any meetings finalized against power-conference programs in nonconference play.

The story is much different for Notre Dame, of course. The Fighting Irish’s future schedules are loaded with high-profile opponents, including Wisconsin in 2026, Purdue in 2027, Arkansas in 2028 and Alabama in 2029, to name a few. Notre Dame will also face Texas A&M in 2024 and 2025.

Notre Dame is 249-131-16 all-time against Big Ten opposition.
